St.George Vertigo Credit Card – Cashback Offer

Who suits the St.George Vertigo Cashback card?

First Timer: you’re looking for a simple card with a few perks to get you started. You’d like a low annual fee and a low interest rate. Rainy Day Prepper: you want a low-cost card to keep in your pocket. Even better if it has interest-free perks when you do have to use it. Carefree Splurger: budgets are a bummer, and you need help with getting on top of debt. Low interest rates and low fees are great.

Overall Rating

St.George is really flexing some muscle with its cashback card. $500 is a lot of dollars to earn back and makes this card good value considering its low annual fee.

It also has a low interest rate, other cashback and discount opportunities, and a discount on the balance transfer interest rate. You could say the Vertigo card offers a “dizzying” good deal, if we were into terrible puns.

What I love about the St.George Vertigo - Cashback card

If you’ve been searching for a card that’s cheap in fees but rewards you in cash, this could be a serendipitous moment. The St.George Vertigo - Cashback card has one of the highest cashback offers in town and a low annual fee which means you’re winning right out of the gate.

You could think about it this way: the maximum cashback pays for the annual fee on your card for 4.2 years.

Ok, enough gasping at the offer. Here’s how the cashback works:

You can earn 10% on purchases at participating retailers for the first 4 months, capped at $500 maximum. You need to be approved for your card before 30 April 2025 (so there isn’t much time left). The cashback will show up as a credit on your Vertigo card account within 30 days.

What are participating retailers? The retailers that earn the 10% back are not a handful of obscure, online brands, which is refreshing to see. St.George says you can earn cashback at most supermarkets (like Woolworths, Coles, IGA and Aldi) and petrol stations.

The exceptions are stores that don’t classify in the Supermarket, Grocers and Service Station merchant categories. For example, Coles Express, Costco, Metropolitan Fresh and wholesaler supermarkets.

✏ Take note: Transactions excluded from the cashback offer include gift card or eGift card purchases at participating supermarkets are not counted as part of eligible spend. Eligible spend also excludes fees, cash, cash-equivalent transactions, third-party payments such as AfterPay, BPAY, PayPal or PayPal equivalent.]

So, while you’ll have to earn your cashback, it’s pretty easy to do if you regularly eat food and fill up a car.

Extras

The St.George Cashback card is a low-cost card, so it doesn’t overflow with features. But, it does come with some extras that can help you save money or earn even more cashback.

Low interest rate: The interest rate is 13.99% p.a., which keeps repayments down if you carry a balance over and have to pay interest.

Low balance transfer rate: You’ll pay only 6.99% p.a. on any balance transfers you make during your application. You have to be approved for the card before 30 April 2025 and can’t transfer from a St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA credit or store card. You can transfer $200 or more and up to 80% of your available credit limit.

Low credit limit: The minimum credit limit is just $500, which can be good for first-time cardholders and those wanting an emergency fund.

Bonus cashback and discounts: You can link your card to the ShopBack app and you could earn exclusive bonus cash back on your account when you shop on the St.George Lounge. You can also earn discounts on food, entertainment, sport and retail through Visa Offers + Perks.

Lastly, you can add one free additional cardholder over 18, and get 55 days interest-free on things you buy. If you have a balance transfer, you won’t get the 55 days interest-free unless you pay the full closing balance on the statement.

What’s not so great

The cashback offer isn’t available if you’ve held a St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA credit card in the last 12 months.

The low balance transfer rate is nice, but other cards (including St.George’s own Vertigo Balance Transfer credit card) offer 0% interest balance transfers that can help you save even more if you have a lot to pay off.

Who suits this card?

Being a minimal-cost kind of card, the St.George Vertigo could suit you if you’re looking for an everyday or rainy day card with a low interest rate, you’re a first-time cardholder or you like to snag big cashback for a low annual fee.

⚡ Just remember the cashback offer ends 30 April 2025.

With St.George Vertigo Credit Card – Cashback Offer, can i buy stuff online from woolies and still get cash back? or i need to use it only "instore"?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    15 June 2023
Hi Bri, that’s a great question! You may use your card to make purchases online however, you will only earn cashback on eligible transactions made at participating supermarkets and petrol stations. St.George will determine cashback depending on what the merchant is classified as to St.George. Although most supermarkets and petrol stations (large and small) are involved in this program, there are certain establishments outside the Supermarket, Grocers, and Service Station categories that will not take part. Supermarkets such as Coles Express, Costco, Metropolitan Fresh, and wholesale supermarkets are some of those that are not participating. Hope this helps!

I recently got my vertigo mastercard. i want to know if only the supermarkets you mentioned count as eligible purchases for the cashback or online purchases on Amazon and other retailers as well? I asked their customer service and they said anything except the exclusions metioned (like cash bpay etc) count towards cash back? Also which pertol stations are included?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    22 May 2023
Hi Jawad, thanks for your message! Unfortunately, like many other card issuers, the specific list of eligible transactions is not publicly available. However, as you mentioned certain types of transactions such as fees, cash-equivalent transactions, third party payments like BPAY, gift card or e-gift card purchases are not considered eligible. Additionally, with the St.George Vertigo Cashback card, while most major supermarkets and many petrol stations participate, there are certain establishments that do not fall under the supermarket, grocer, or service station merchant categories and therefore may not participate (e.g., Coles Express, Costco, Metropolitan Fresh, and some wholesaler supermarkets - you should check with the individual retailer before purchasing).Hope this helps!

What is the minimum salary I can apply this credit card?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    6 April 2021
Hi Alice, there is no listed minimum income requirement for this card. Your application is assessed on a number of factors including how your income compares to your expenses. The minimum credit limit of this card is $6,000, so you'll need to be able to service a limit at least this high. For example, other cards with a $6,000 limit have minimum income requirements from $35,000 to $40,000. I hope that helps.
