David Jones Launches Mastercard in Partnership with Latitude Financial

Last updated

Pauline Hatch

The first credit cards have been revealed under the new partnership between iconic Australian retailer David Jones and Australia’s leading consumer lender Latitude Financial.

After terminating its contract with American Express in 2023, David Jones signed an exclusive 10-year agreement with Latitude Financial. Latitude currently partners with prominent brands such as JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Samsung and Apple.

Now, the first Latitude-issued credit cards have been released. Compared side-by-side, the new David Jones Premier and David Jones Prestige cards include similar features to the now-discontinued American Express cards.

Both cards earn points on everyday spending and include exclusive invitations to events and previews, shopping discounts and free delivery for online orders. David Jones is also offering travel discounts with Expedia, Wotif and booking.com when you book using your card.

In addition, the David Jones Prestige credit card includes complimentary lounge passes and comprehensive travel insurance.

Customers will notice the biggest change is the rewards program; rather than opting for Amex Membership Rewards or Qantas Points, cardholders will earn David Jones Points.

These points can be redeemed for David Jones gift cards, credit or purchases via the online David Jones points hub.

While the terms and conditions mention transferring points to airline frequent flyer programs, no information confirms that this feature is currently available.

As part of the contract, Latitude will acquire David Jones’ existing credit card portfolio, including those held by American Express.

Cardholders with an active David Jones American Express card will transition onto a new David Jones credit card, and the balance transferred to Latitude. Membership rewards points will also be carried over to the new account.

David Jones has stated it will communicate with its customers throughout the transition, which is expected to be completed by July 2024.

Out of all the credit lenders on offer, David Jones says it chose Latitude because of its “modern technology platform”, which can deliver a better customer experience.

“Our Financial Services program is a core pillar of our service offering to customers,” said Scott Fyfe, CEO of David Jones. “We have partnered with Latitude because we share a common vision to deliver a best-in-class, digital-first card offering.”

Latitude serves more than 2.8 million customers in Australia and New Zealand and has a partner network of over 5,500 stores.

How does one obtain airline lounge passes when a David Jones Latitude card holder?

Hi Robyn, you can go to DJ’s website here and look for the FAQ “How do I book my complimentary airport lounge passes?” for the steps. Basically you follow a Luxury Escapes link to book your airport lounge (you may need to create a Luxury Escapes account). Then you enter your credit card info and choose the promo option which changes the price to $0. Enjoy the luxury, Robyn!

How can I cancel my card? The number shown on this site refers you to 1300 550 006 where there is a huge waiting time. I am getting very frustrated and irritated with the pillar to post approach for such a simple matter

Hi Margaret, I hear you - I tried to call DJs to help with people with these comments and gave up. I can only assume they’re inundated. You could try contacting them on social media as another avenue. I hope it’s sorted out for you, Margaret.

Hi Victoria, unfortunately DJs haven't explicitly stated which stores earn points. In its terms and conditions, it says it depends on the merchant’s category code that’s set up on their payment system. It says “The merchant must be categorised and notified to us with a Merchant Category Code (MCC) of: • MCC 5541 (being Service Stations) • MCC 5542 (being Automated Fuel Dispensers) • MCC 5172 (being Petroleum and Petroleum Products) • MCC 5983 (being Fuel Dealers) • MCC 5411 (being Grocery Stores, Supermarkets)”. Not super helpful I’m afraid!

I am going a Mediterranean cruise in August. The Princess Sun cruise ship require a credit for purchased on board. Can I use my Latitude card for this❓
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    5 August 2024
Hi Gillian, I haven’t seen anything specific about using the card on board a cruise ship, but I’d imagine it would be transacted as an international purchase. It’s likely you’ll pay a currency conversion fee on your purchases if that’s the case. But the DJs Latitude card is a normal credit card that should be able to be used wherever credit cards are accepted.

I have points which I didn’t convert to gift cards What happens to my points if I don’t activate the new card
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    23 July 2024
Hi Irene, your points would have been automatically transferred over to your new card. According to David Jones, you can only access your points through your card’s Latitude account. I would suggest calling David Jones to cancel your card if you don’t plan on activating it, or see if you can transfer your points. The number is 1300 550 006. Thanks Irene!

How can I cancel my David jones latitude card? I have been waiting on the phone for over half an hour. Not happy. Anita

    22 July 2024
Hi Anita, I’m sorry to hear about that. The only way to cancel a new card is via their customer service. I saw your other comment and I’d say the delays in getting onto customer service are the result of the changeover occurring recently. Hopefully the bugs are taken care of and you can get onto them soon to sort everything out.

Hi Margaria, DJ’s haven’t been too forthcoming with information for us with this card. I did find this phone number buried in a PDS that might help you, 1300 550 006. Let us know how you go.

What are the participating supermarkets you can use the David jones premium at
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    5 July 2024
Hi Sonya, DJ’s weren’t too upfront about what these were, but they are categorised by their merchant codes. Sounds complicated, but they’re categorised like this: MCC 5541 (being Service Stations) MCC 5542 (being Automated Fuel Dispensers) MCC 5172 (being Petroleum and Petroleum Products) MCC 5983 (being Fuel Dealers) MCC 5411 (being Grocery Stores, Supermarkets) There’s a great list over on OzBargain that you can look up the codes, which I’ve linked for you. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/mcc_list Good luck Sonya!

Will this card offer interest free plans?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    12 June 2024
Hi Dejan, I tried to contact DJ’s about your question but couldn’t get through. There isn’t any information about interest-free plans now that the cards are Latitude and not Amex, so it looks like it may not be an option. However, the DJ’s site states that they’ll be releasing more information on the card in July 2024. Thanks Dejan.

Will the $24 additional card fee be charged on the prestige card & do you think the $295 annual fee is worth it.?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    7 June 2024
Hi Peter! There's no additional cardholder fee on the Prestige card. As to whether it's worth it...I would start by calculating if you would earn enough points with the partnering retailers to outweigh the annual fee. Then look at the benefits to see if you would use them. It's a good idea to compare to other rewards cards too, in case you find you'd prefer frequent flyer points or different bank points instead. I hope that helps!

Will I be able to continue having supplementary cards associated to my new Latitude credit card?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    31 May 2024
Hi Debbie, it appears so. The Premiere card looks like it’s the only one that has an additional cardholder fee of $24. The others say “Not applicable” so you might not be able to add them in.
