This Card: The Lowdown

An enticing option for anyone looking to earn more on their everyday spending, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card boosts points-earning power on purchases made at supermarkets and petrol stations, while still offering an appealing base earn rate for spending everywhere else.

Earning points on one of Australia’s most flexible rewards programs – the Membership Rewards Ascent program – this card could be the perfect option for cardholders looking to transfer points to a range of 11 airline partners, including Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

With this card's awesome features such as $200 Travel Credit to use each year, $0 annual fee in the first year as well as its everyday value in rewards, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card is a card that you’ll be happy with to keep in your wallet year after year.

Digging Deeper

With the basics covered, it’s time to dig a little deeper into what’s on offer with the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card, so you can decide whether this card is right for you.

This Card: As a Rewards Card

While it may not count Qantas Frequent Flyer within its many airline partner programs, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card does allow cardholders to earn points on the American Express Membership Rewards program, which happens to be one of the most versatile and flexible points programs in Australia.

Everyday Earning

In terms of everyday earning, this is one of the best points-earning cards out there for regular credit card users. Not only does it provide the potential to earn triple points on that ever-so-essential supermarket shopping, but it also has no points cap or points shaping. That means you will continue to earn the same rate, no matter how much you spend on your card.

  • Earn 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at major supermarkets and petrol stations
  • Earn 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on overseas spend
  • Earn 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on all other purchases including utilities, insurance, telecommunications, and government purchases.

Major supermarkets include Bi-Lo, Coles, Harris Farm Markets, IGA and Woolworths. Major petrol stations include Ampol, BP, Caltex Woolworths, Metro, Shell, Woolworths Petrol and 7 Eleven.

One other thing that’s worth mentioning here is the fact that this card allows up to four additional cardholders for no extra fee. Bearing in mind that there is no points cap in place, you could have five cardholders spending on one account, all racking up points on their everyday spending.

Point Redemption Options

When it comes time to redeem those points, you have plenty of options to choose from. You could choose to redeem your points for gift cards or credit your account to cover certain transactions. You could use your points to pay for purchases at Myer.

Alternatively, you could use your points for travel. Earning points on the Ascent program allows cardholders to redeem points for flights with any of American Express’s 11 leading airline partner programs, mostly at a ratio of 3:1. These partners include Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Hawaiian Miles and Qatar Avios Privilege Club.

Cardholders can also opt to use their points when booking travel with American Express Travel Online, with no restrictions, no block-out dates, and no booking fees (t’s & c’s apply). Booking with Webjet or Helloworld Travel provides alternative ways to use points to book travel, or cardholders may choose to redeem their points with the card’s hotel partners, which includes Hilton Honors.

This Card: As a Travel Rewards Card

Whether traveling on business or for pleasure, cardholders can take advantage of several travel-related benefits with the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card in their wallet.

Travel Credit

While American Express used to offer cardholders a free flight each year with the Platinum Edge, now cardholders have the opportunity to choose their travel with a $200 Travel Credit. Provided each year after you pay your annual fee, this $200 Travel Credit can be used towards eligible flights, hotels, car hire, and more booked online at American Express Travel Online.

To be eligible for the Travel Credit, cardholders must have paid their annual fee and minimum payment. Each Travel Credit is only valid for one year and cannot be carried forward. It can only be used in a single travel booking and is not refundable if travel is cancelled. You'll need to spend $200 minimum to redeem your Travel Credit using your Platinum Edge credit card using American Express Travel Online. The Travel Credit will be credited to your account in 3 business days (but allow up to 30).

Insurance Cover

A standard feature on most platinum cards these days, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card offers cardholders a range of travel-related insurance covers. To be eligible for cover, you must use your card to pay for your trip in full. Providing cover for you, your spouse, and children (25 years of age or younger) travelling with you, these covers include:

  • Trip Cancellation and Amendment Cover
  • Personal Liability Cover
  • Personal Accident Cover
  • Personal Baggage, Valuables, Money and Travel Documents Cover
  • Trip Cancellation and Amendment Cover
  • Medical Emergency Expenses Cover
  • Travel Inconvenience Cover (which may cover you for flight delays, missed connections or luggage delays)

This Card: Extras on Offer

Quite often, American Express cards are sold on their extras. Offering cardholders a nice selection of useful extras, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card goes big on service, support, and functional features.

Amex Offers

Allowing cardholders to save money when using their card at a variety of retailers, Amex Offers provides immediate statement credits when they hit a certain target amount with specific retailers. With offers saved to your card account online, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on these in order to take advantage of offers at your favourite retailers.

Service and Support

Well-known for its excellent customer service, American Express supports cardholders by offering cover on their retail purchases, backed by 24/7 Global Card Support.

  • Online Fraud Protection Guarantee means you will not be held liable for any unauthorised charges.
  • Buyer’s Advantage Cover allows you to extend the manufacturer’s warranty by up to 12 months on items purchased on the card.
  • Card Purchase Cover offers to replace an item purchased on the card, should it be broken or stolen within 90 days.
  • Card Refund Cover will reimburse you if you have a change of heart and are refused a refund on an unused purchased item within 90 days.
  • Global Card Support provides account assistance to cardholders no matter where they are in the world, any time of the day or night.
  • Compatible with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay, the card can be a great option for tech lovers.

Interest Free Period

With its relatively high purchase rate, it’s safe to say the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card is not a low-rate credit card. But, it does provide ways in which cardholders can save on interest. Getting to know how the card’s interest-free period works could allow you up to 55 days interest-free on purchases, helping you to save on interest month-to-month.

However, it is worth noting that the number of interest-free days you benefit from will depend on the date of the purchase, and how far through the statement period it is made. To be eligible, you must also pay the closing balance each month by the due date. There is no interest-free period on balance transfers or balances carried forward.

This Card: The Essentials

Time to look at what’s required of you if you want to apply for the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card. In terms of eligibility, you must be at least 18 years old, and no history of bad debt or payment default. You must also be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or hold a long-term visa. Long term means at least 12 months and does not include student visas.

As we mentioned, this card has a relatively high purchase rate, so if you want the card – and all its features and rewards – to offer value, it’s best to clear the balance by the due date each month. While the standard annual fee is substantial, you do receive a $200 Travel Credit each year, which more than covers the $195 annual fee. As long as you want to spend that $200 on travel, you’re then benefitting from the rest of the card’s features and rewards ‘for free’.

Decision Time

Providing cardholders with an outstanding earn rate on their everyday spending at supermarkets and petrol stations, the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card is an excellent choice for long term rewards earning. With $200 Travel Credit on offer each year, this helps to balance out the card’s standard annual fee, creating additional value on the rest of the features and extras on offer. Plus, new cardholders can enjoy $0 annual card fee in the first year if they apply and get approved.

I’m travelling on and off in 2025, how long is the travel insurance? Is there a certain amount of days it’s valid or will it cover me all year for all my trips?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    23 May 2024
Hi Alex, the Platinum insurance terms say you're covered for 180 consecutive days of travel. You're covered for each trip as long as you meet all the eligibility criteria, which includes spending a certain amount of your travel costs on the card, meeting age requirements and having a return ticket. You can see all the eligibility criteria in Amex's PDS. Happy travels!

Hi Yvonne, I looked into this for you and it states that the travel insurance includes the primary or the additional cardholder of the account. For more information on the eligibility, terms and conditions, and the exclusions, you can check AMEX Platinum Edge’s official insurance T&Cs PDS here.

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    11 July 2023
Hi Mee, the exchange rate between Membership Rewards points and KrisFlyer miles is 2:1. Which means you can convert 2 Membership Rewards points into 1 KrisFlyer mile. Additionally, you can only initiate transfers in increments of 5000 points or more. Hope this helps!

Hi Pauline. I am travelling to Vietnam & Cambodia on a 18 day trip with Intrepid Travel, leaving 27 September 2023. It has been suggested that I check with my credit card provider if travel insurance is included. I have previously had a David Jones AMEX card but cancelled it after a couple of years. I have researched your cards and wondered what sort of insurance cover the American Express Platinum Edge credit card offers? I would be happy to top up the cover if reasonable. I would be grateful for your advice please. Thank you very much.

Hi Jennifer, indeed the American Express Platinum Edge card offers various insurances as part of its benefits, such as international travel insurance, flight inconvenience insurance, transit accident insurance, and more. To obtain detailed information about the coverage level, terms, and any general exclusions, I recommend referring to the official American Express insurance PDS. Enjoy your epic trip!

    19 January 2023
Hi Waq, I looked into the requirements for the American Express Platinum Edge card, but I couldn't find any information about a specific income requirement. The only thing they mention is that you should not have a history of bad debt or defaults, along with the other standard eligibility criteria. However, if you were just approved for another card, applying for another one soon after isn’t considered a good idea as it may make you look “risky” to the provider.

Hi Laura the Amex Platinum Edge does not come with Lounge access, but does feature a $200 annual Travel Credit and complimentary domestic and international travel insurance. In regards to the points, they don't expire long as you keep your American Express Membership Rewards account active. To check out cards with lounge access, you can compare a range of frequent flyer credit cards instead. Hope this helps!

Does Amex Platinum Edge still allow Opt In to Qantas Freq Flyer with monthly points transfer, as it has done previously? If yes, is it point for point or? Thanks Ernie
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    9 May 2019
Hi Ernie - you cannot transfer to Qantas points with the Platinum Edge. Have a look at the Qantas Discovery. With no annual fee and 0.75 Qantas points earn per $1 spent. This could be a good edition to deliver some Qantas points with AMEX. Another option and card that I really like for lower spenders is the HSBC Platinum Qantas. Great 1 point per $1 earn rate up to $2,500 spend per month. Good insurance with the card and a low $79 annual fee, waived first year.

I am a American Express platinum card holder and my wife is an additional holder. My question is . . . Am I able to get the $200 flight discount and one for my wife on a flight from Port Macquarie NSW to Sydney return, travelling in March of next year, and do I have to purchase now or wait till later on in the year. If all can be done what do I do and how do you go about it. NEver taken advantage of this deal before . . . Stupid me.

    17 April 2019
Hi John, you can redeem the travel credit at any time its valid. To redeem the Travel Credit, you must have paid the annual fee and minimum payment by the due date. The $200 Travel Credit can be redeemed against any single eligible travel booked and paid online through americanexpress.com.au/travel. The Travel Credit can be used for 365 days from the anniversary date and cannot be carried forward to any subsequent year. For bookings less than $200 any unused portion of the Travel Credit will be forfeited. I would suggest that you review the pricing on the AMEX travel site then book whenever you feel is good. The booking can be in anyone's name.
