Compare Rewards Cards Image Description

Point calculations are accurate as of 21 June 2024 but may be subject to change without notice. All routes may have additional taxes and charges. Check on the official American Express page for the updated calculations.

So, you’re searching for a Qantas rewards card that offers a great earn rate, no points capping, and a heap of useful extras. You also don’t want to pay an annual fee.

A card like that couldn’t exist, surely? That’s too much to ask.

Well, welcome to Unicorn Town, because the Qantas American Express Discovery card ticks every box on the wishlist. It’s a pretty special credit card with lots of perks, rewards, and value. But, is it right for you? Let’s take a look.

What we love...

Using this card, you can earn 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent on card purchases, except those made at government bodies in Australia, where you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1. You’ll also earn 1.75 additional Qantas Points per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services within Australia. All with no points capping! The Qantas Points you earn can be redeemed for Classic Flight Rewards with Qantas and more than 50 partner airlines and their affiliates.

Redeem points and use them on eligible flights to over 1,000 destinations worldwide with Qantas and participating airline partners through Classic Flight Rewards. You can fly premium economy from Melbourne to Canberra or Sydney with Qantas for 8,000 points.

While there are plenty of other Qantas rewards cards that offer a similar earn rate (with or without points capping), the difference between those cards and the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card is that with the Discovery card, there’s $0 annual fees.

Usually, you’d have to compare points and features against the annual fee to work out if a card is worth it for you. But, with the Discovery credit card, you’ll pay nothing out (as long as you avoid other fees and interest), while getting loads back in rewards and extras.

What’s not so great...

The card’s purchase rate is sizable, so to make the most of the features on offer, be sure to pay off the balance each month before it starts attracting interest. However, if you can pay the full balance by the due date on each statement, you'll get up to 44 days interest-free on purchases. Even though that’s a shorter interest-free period than other cards, it still gives you plenty of wiggle room to manage your cash flow.

Why should you choose this card?

You may choose this card for the $0 annual fee feature or its welcome offer. You may choose it for its Qantas points earning potential, or extras such as 24/7 global customer service, fast global card replacement, four free additional cards, and up to 44 days interest-free on purchases.

You may also choose this card to take advantage of its Card Refund and Card Purchase Covers, and its online fraud protection guarantee. Or quite simply, you may choose this card for all of the above, knowing that you have all of those versatile features and rewards while paying $0 annual fees.

How to get frequent flyer number on file?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    18 November 2024
Hi Anil, you can find your frequent flyer number on your account activation emails, when you log in to your frequent flyer account or app, or you can call the account provider directly. I hope that helps!

Is there an income requirement for this card? I can't seem to find one. Would I get accepted earning $36000 a year as a casual for this card having substantial savings and a clean credit history as I have never applied for a line of credit before? Thank you.
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    13 November 2024
Hi Daniel, many banks no longer offer a minimum income. Basically all you can do is make sure you meet all the eligibility criteria listed. Since this card has no annual fee, chances are the eligibility requirement may be lower. Good luck!

Can I use either the American Express Lounge or Qantas Lounge when travelling at Melbourne airport. thank you
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    25 June 2024
Hi Evie, the Amex Qantas Discovery doesn’t come with lounge passes. You can compare cards with lounge access here. Credit cards with complimentary passes to The Centurion (Amex’s lounge) or Qantas Club Lounge should give you access to the Melbourne airport lounges (just make sure you meet the eligibility criteria and register first if necessary). Thanks Evie!.

I see the minimum credit limit is $2000 on the Discovery Credit Card. If I apply, would I be able to increase the amount immediately to $10 000?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 March 2024
Hi Sulize, if you want to increase your credit limit at any time you can request it by phone or possibly through the app. But, whether or not you're approved for the new amount depends on your application and whether you meet the eligibility for it. I hope that helps, thanks Sulize!

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

I previous had a Diners card linked to Qantas. Never had a carry over balance. And that is what I want in another card. Diners card charges were expensive. Just to confirm this card has no annual fee ever and no yearly card fee. And no interest if balance is paid by due date, correct.
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    9 January 2024
Hi Cheryl, yes you’re correct. The Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card doesn't have an annual fee and doesn't charge any interest if you pay the balance in full by the due date.

I have applied for a credit card with St George Bank and it was declined twice in the past 4 months. Prior to St George I banked with ANZ, where I was a victim of scammers for a large amount of money. As a result of being scammed all my outgoing debits were in arrears for late payments due to my account being locked. What are the chances of me applying successfully for a cr card with you.

Hi Angelina, thank you for the message and sorry to hear what has happened to you. You should definitely order a copy of your credit file to see what the banks can see about you. The government has a great guide on what to do after being scammed, you can find here: https://moneysmart.gov.au/check-and-report-scams/what-to-do-if-you-ve-been-scammed . The other thing to note is that applying for multiple credit accounts in a short period of time can also hurt your credit file. Hopefully the information at Moneysmart can help you on the right track. Best of luck Angelina!

Hi, I have a few questions about the Qantas American Express Discovery Credit Card: 1. How does the introductory offer of 0% on purchases for 12 months work? If I make a purchase, is it 0% for 12 months as long as I make the minimum payment or, is it 0% for 44 days? 2. With regards to eligibility, the minimum criteria is to hold a long term Visa of at least 12 months. Is that 12 months remaining or just 12 months total duration? I have 6 months left on my current visa and an application submitted for a further 2 years. Should I wait before applying for this card? Thanks for your help!
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    17 October 2023
Hi Mitch, the introductory offer is 0% for purchases made within the 12 months but you will need to pay the minimum monthly payment. The 0% for 44 days will kick in after the 12-month introductory offer is up. With the visa, you might need to call Amex directly to check on that one. We don't have any additional information about the duration of the Visa required, sorry. All the best!

On the Interest free period on purchases of up to 44 days, does this also mean it's interest free on eligible purchases or all purchases? And when does the 44 days start, the day you make the purchase?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    4 September 2023
Hi Mary, the interest free period begins after the promotional zero interest period for purchases of 12 months ends. It starts from the day you make a purchase and continues until the payment due date shown on your statement. To enjoy this, you need to pay the full amount by the due date (excluding any balance transfer or introductory offers) and not carry over any past balance from previous statements. Hope this helps!

I understand that if you were to withdraw cash from an atm there would be no interest charged on this card? Is that correct?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

Hi Mary, this card doesn’t allow withdrawals at all, which is why it has no cash advance fees or interest charges.
