Who suits the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card?

Globetrotter: you love travelling, and get a buzz from earning points that make your trips free and more fun. Deal Digger: you're always on the hunt for perks and freebies like insurances, dining discounts and cashback. Money Geek: you watch your accounts, and like budgeting and hitting money goals. You want good bang for your bucks.

Editor's Overview

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is shaking things up with a massive 130,000 Qantas Points if you meet the eligibility requirements, and one of the highest points-earning rates in town. You could also get $200 back on your card, which offsets the first year’s annual fee and makes it an even better bang-for-your-points card.

It includes rare perks that only ANZ offers, such as Rental Vehicle Excess cover in Australia and cashback offers with thousands of brands. You’ll save on waived fees other cards charge for, including Qantas Frequent Flyer memberships.

This card could be a great travellers companion with the potential to save money on your travel costs, or one to help you earn and redeem points for freebies and even get money back on your spending.

Full Review: ANZ Frequent Flyer Black

If you’re after Qantas Points, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black delivers one of the highest earn rates. It’s a good companion for travellers with its mix of international insurances, lounge visits and some pretty epic bonus points if you hit the spending requirements.

It does have a higher annual fee, but that is standard for higher-tier Qantas Points-earning cards. I’ll run through its features and perks, and then look at how to use the card.

Bonus points: To earn the 90,000 Qantas Points and $200 back on your card, you’ll need to spend at least $5000 in the first 3 months. You'll also get another 40,000 Qantas Points by keeping your card for at least a year. You also can’t have held an ANZ frequent flyer credit card in the previous 12 months.

Qantas Club visits: You’ll get 2 visits to a Qantas Club Lounge or Qantas-operated International Business Lounge every 12 months. The invites are single-entry only, only for a single person, not you and a guest. You have to book your lounge visit using the free ANZ Personal Concierge service and must be travelling on a Qantas or Jetstar flight with a QF or JQ flight number.

Bonus Qantas Points: You can earn 1 bonus Qantas Point when you buy Qantas passenger flights and membership fees like Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club. Bonus points are uncapped.

Discounts on memberships: This card comes with a complimentary $99.50 Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, which is something most cards are removing but ANZ still offers. You can also get a discount on your first year’s Qantas Club membership, which could save you up to $256.

How can you use the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black as a traveller?

Much like a good travel agent, this card helps you save money on your travel essentials and gives you discounts on dining and interesting experiences. It has some standout features like Rental Vehicle Excess insurance in Australia, which I can tell you from experience is a relief to have when a rock comes hurtling at your rental car while you’re driving through the Tasmanian mountains.

Feature How it helps travellers
International and Domestic Travel Insurance This travel insurance activates when you meet the Eligibility for Cover terms, which include spending at least $250 on travel costs on your card. You and your eligible spouse and dependants under age 25 may be included on the insurance. The insurance may cover unexpected expenses such as cancellations, medical expenses, loss or theft of property and more for travel up to 6 months.
Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia This insurance can help with the costs of rental vehicle damage and theft. A rental vehicle includes a campervan or motorhome up to 4.5 tonnes and most regular cars like sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs and people movers.
ANZ Cashrewards ANZ cardholders can access exclusive cashback deals with over 2000 major brands that include car rental hire, accommodation and retail stores. There are no membership fees and you can earn cashback online and in-store.

How many Qantas Points can you earn?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black earns unlimited points, but does have a tiered system plus bonus points for certain products. Here’s how it looks:

  • You’ll earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent up to $7,500 per statement period
  • Then you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent until the next statement period
  • 1 bonus point is earned when you purchase certain Qantas products such as Qantas and Jetstar flights or membership fees.

The Qantas Points program stands out from other frequent flyer programs because it’s flexible to use. Qantas has done a truly stellar job of making points redemption easy and gives you a huge range of ways to spend them.

For instance, its Qantas Marketplace has over 20,000 products from 900 big brands that include fashion, technology, sport and more. Or, you can redeem points for Qantas or Jetstar flights and flight upgrades or to book accommodation.

Qantas is a member of the oneworld global alliance, which means you can use Qantas Points or Points+Pay to purchase flights on over 30 airlines worldwide.

More deal-sweeteners and perks

Let's take a look at some of the other extras on the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card.

Feature How it helps you
Concierge services Massively underrated, concierges are on-hand 24/7 to help you organise travel, accommodation, entertainment bookings, shopping and source information on services like pet care.
Insurance You’ll get Purchase Protection Insurance and Extended Warranty Insurance on eligible purchases. These insurances can help you save money on lost, damaged and stolen items.
Exclusives by ANZ A perk reserved for ANZ Black cardholders only, exclusives by ANZ gives you access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. For instance, you might be invited to a meet-and-greet with tennis players at the Australian Open, or a ticket to the Archibald Prize dinner.
ANZ Instalment Plans In Buy now pay later fashion, you can break up big purchases and repay them over 3, 6 or 12 months.
Digital device compatibility Syncs with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and wearables like Fitbit and Garmin.

What’s not so great

The downsides of this card are not too bad compared to others in the premium credit card tier.

The annual fee is on the higher end of the scale but it sits about right for a premium card that earns Qantas Points and comes with all its other perks like travel insurance. The annual fee is made up of a $370 annual fee and a $55 Rewards Program Services Fee. You’ll need to work out if you’ll earn enough points to cover (and surpass) the cost of the annual fee.

If you’re thinking of adding extra cardholders, just know that it costs $65 per year for each additional cardholder ($10 card fee plus $55 for the rewards service fee). Of course, you’ll hopefully be doubling down on earning points, and any additional cardholders can access the extras like insurance, too.

Who is this card for?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black could suit you if:

  • You typically use Qantas, Jetstar or partnering airlines for travel and want to earn and redeem points for flights and upgrades
  • You’re a frequent traveller and want a card that makes travel cheaper
  • You’re a pro at using points to get freebies

HI, how do i activate rental vehicle excess, renting car in Hobart late December
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    13 November 2024
Hi Jennifer! Cover activates when you’ve paid for the full cost of the car hire on your card, and collect the car from the rental agency. Here’s the insurance PDS with all the details - rental vehicle excess cover starts on page 69. Have a great trip!

Hi Pauline, I'm trying to find out a bit more about the complimentary travel insurance, as my wife has a couple of extra 'high risk' pre-existing conditions that normally result in us paying a slightly higher premium. Do you know if these are covered or where we may be able to find this info ? Thanks
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    13 November 2024
Hey Steve, ANZ covers some pre-existing conditions in its insurance policy, but as you’d expect there are a lot of criteria around what’s covered. Read through the PDS (it can help to do a search for the term “preexisting”) to see what’s covered. You’ll likely need to provide medical information, and ANZ may review and approve/deny your request. Good luck!

It seems I am no longer receiving points on my ANZ Qantas FF CC for payments processed through BPay. Is there another way to process payments and receive points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    29 October 2024
Hi Andrew, not really, not if you can’t do it over the phone or directly from your card. One option is PostBillPay, which lets you pay from a Paypal account that you could attach to your credit card…but it’s still a government service and might only award points if your card earns points on government payments. Unfortunately most banks no longer award points for BPAY payments these days.

Wondering why ANZ is charging $65 for additional card holders (comprising 10 for the extra card and 55 to opt into Qantas rewards). The additional card holder isn't to transfer points to their Qantas account. The primary card holder gets all the points and they've already paid 55 to opt into Qantas rewards. Do you know why ANZ would slug the additional card holder $55 when they don't get any Qantas points. Don't think other banks do this - they just charge the fee once to the primary card holder.

Hey Joy, as someone with an ANZ card and an additional cardholder, I feel every bit of this! ANZ says it’s to cover the costs of managing and maintaining the rewards program - or it could just be banks being banks! The good news is that Qantas lets you transfer points super easily to other people, so you can share if you like…or not 😉

Hi Pauline, I've held the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card for over 12 months + the 3 months it states it could take to credit, but my bonus 40,000 have not arrived. When contacting ANZ, they have stated this was not the offer at the time, but I specifically remember NOT getting 130,000 and then realising that the bonus 12 months would be paid after 12 months... How do I prove what the offer was at the time? None of the documents issued to me state anything to do with the either the 130k or 90k points... Thanks!
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    11 October 2024
Hi Lee, we don’t have the old offers stored on our site, but you could try using a site that archives old web pages. The most famous one is Wayback Machine but unfortunately it's offline at the moment. That could be a good avenue to explore, though. I hope that helps!

Does the 'ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card' earn FF Points using BPAY... I ask because other Card Providers have recently EXCLUDED BPAY Transactions from earning FF points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    9 August 2024
Hi Scott, unfortunately ANZ says BPAY doesn’t earn points. Its terms say “Examples of transactions and other items which will not earn ANZ Reward Points are interest charges, fees, cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers, BPAY or Post BillPay payments, Government Charges (includes but is not limited to payments for goods, services, charges and/or levies made to a local, state or federal government or statutory authorities or related agencies), transactions for gambling or gaming purposes and reversed or refunded transactions”.

Hi Andrew, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black doesn’t feature a balance transfer on application. Its main use is for earning rewards points. Hidden in the fine print on the ANZ site I found that you can request for a balance transfer to this card but you won’t earn points. You’ll find our comparison of balance transfer credit cards will show the balance transfer fee in the description. Hope that helped you out Andrew

    14 May 2024
Hi Jerome, this is a good question that I get asked a lot! While there isn't a published list specifying eligible spending for the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card (or other card issuers in fact), eligible spending generally includes everyday transactions like paying for groceries, dining at restaurants, and similar purchases. It generally covers that majority of retail transactions, but it’s always a good idea to check the T&C’s of your card.
