The Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum Card

If you’re thinking about applying for a rewards card but you’re not sure which rewards program would benefit you most, the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum Card could be the card for you.

You get 100,000 bonus Amplify points (worth up to $450 in eGift cards) with a minimum spend and gives you the option to earn and redeem points on either the Amplify program or the Qantas program, the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum Card provides a decent earn rate and plenty of platinum perks.

If that sounds like it might be right up your street, read on to find out all the need-to-know on this entirely appealing piece of plastic.

What we love...

First up is the discounted annual fee. New cardholders only have to pay a $49 annual fee the first year, saving $75 while still getting all the features, platinum perks, and the quick bonus points that the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum card offers. After the intro period, the standard $124 card fee applies, which is quite reasonable for a platinum card.

Now, let’s talk about those two rewards programs. If you opt to earn on the Amplify program, you could earn 1 point per $1 spent on eligible purchases within Australia and overseas.

If you choose the Qantas program, you could earn 0.5 Qantas points per $1 spent on eligible purchases, to be redeemed for flights and upgrades with Qantas and its partner airlines, or on more than 3,000 products, experiences, and vouchers from the Qantas Store.

Your points can be redeemed on frequent flyer programs such as Malaysia Airlines’ Enrich and Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer programs, or on gift cards, retail vouchers, homewares, travel, and more. For example, you can redeem a $50 e-gift card from a variety of shops, including David Jones, Myer, Harvey Norman, and more, for 11,100 Amplify Points. Bagging 100,000 bonus Amplify points will surely give you more flexibility in how you use your points.

If you want to earn Qantas points, check out Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum Credit Card with Qantas Rewards.

Point calculations are accurate as of 1 August 2024 but may be subject to change without notice. All routes may have additional taxes and charges. Check on the official Bank of Melbourne page for the updated calculations.

What’s not so great...

We all know credit cards come with small print attached. When you apply for the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum Card, you should know that it comes with a fairly hefty ongoing cash advance rate.

Also, just note that you won't be eligible for the bonus points offer if you currently hold or have held an Amplify, Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card issued by Bank of Melbourne, St.George or BankSA in the last 12 months.

Why should you choose this card?

If you are looking for a rewards card that comes with generous bonus points, this card could be perfect for you. For a discounted first year annual fee, you can benefit from a number of insurance covers such as the following:

  • International travel insurance for up to 3 months
  • Overseas transit accident insurance
  • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance
  • Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia cover
  • Purchase protection insurance for up to 4 months
  • Extended warranty insurance

Other benefits include access to Visa’s Luxury Hotel Collection, exclusive offers from My Offers Hub and Visa Offers and Perks, up to 55 days of interest-free on purchases, 24/7 fraud monitoring, and one free additional cardholder to help you earn points faster.

I recently cancelled my St George Amplify rewards credit card to open a new amplify card with Bank of Melbourne not knowing st George bank and Bank of melbourne bank are the same bank. I only realised when opening the BOM app and saw all my st george accounts listed. Having not been aware of these two banks affiliation has made me ineligible to the 30 000 pt offer for this new card. Can I do anything about this? I wasnt made aware of this affiliation from the start and feel deceived that I went to all this trouble for nothing. If I had known I would have asked more questions. Please make it be known that this can occur. I will be looking where exactly this is stated in the fine print. I dont feel st george/bom banks were transparent in their promotions. Regards Sia

Hi Sia, thank you for letting us know. I've updated our review to include the terms. Normally banks don't withhold offers just because you've held a card with an affiliated bank, so this one is unexpected. I'd suggest calling BOM as soon as you can to explain the situation and see if you can cancel the card under a cooling-off period. Thanks Sia.

do i need to advise of my overseas travel plans
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    17 May 2023
Hi Matthew, it would be best to let Bank of Melbourne of your planned trip. This way if they notice overseas charges on your card, they won’t block access to your account. You can also get written confirmation of eligibility for cover of your overseas trip. To do this, you can visit checkyourcover.com.au/bankofmelbournel and provide the necessary information. Have a great trip!

Could you help me find a credit card I am eligible for
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    5 January 2023
Hi Larissa, there are a lot of cards to choose from and although we can’t recommend one card over another, it actually depends on what you’re looking for in a card and how you’ll use it. You can use our comparison tools to view some of the different cards and their offers for your options. Some cards list out their detailed eligibility, and some unfortunately don't. Drill down on each card you’re interested in to read our review, find out more information and then see if the card is for you.

does the amplify platinum credit card gain reward points for paying bills such as electricity, gas and other household bills?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    3 May 2022
Hi Gae, good question! Eligible transactions are those that you make daily like filling up at the pump, groceries, when you dine in restaurants, etc. If your utilities can be paid for as a standard credit card transaction, then you’ll probably earn points. If you’re putting them through as BPAY transactions, points generally won’t earn points Looking closer at BOM Amplify Platinum card’s terms, there’s no list of which are considered eligible. However, it states that eligible transactions do not include cash equivalent transactions, transactions with local, state or government-related agencies, refunds, balance transfers, etc.

Hi, what is the minimum yearly salary that you need to be eligible for this card?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    8 February 2022
Hi Gio, I checked on BOM Amplify Platinum credit card’s terms but unfortunately it does not specify the minimum yearly salary amount. It only states that you should at least be 18 years of age, a permanent AU/NZ resident or hold an acceptable Visa with a minimum of 1 year before expiry, a regular verifiable Australian taxable income, and have a fixed verifiable residential AU address. We dug into credit cards that have a low income requirement if you’d like to compare your options.

What are the 'criteria' for earning the 60,000 bonus points? We don't have a current card with this bank.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    15 June 2017
Hi Bronwyn, I have grabbed the terms from the BOM site. The Bonus points promotion is available when you apply for a new Amplify Platinum credit card between 3rd May 2017 and 20th September 2017 and spend the minimum amount of $3,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days from card approval on one or more transactions. Eligible purchases do not include BPAY, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account. The bonus points depend on your choice of Rewards Program. 40,000 bonus Qantas Points or Amplify Points will be credited to your points balance within 12 weeks after the spend criteria is met. An additional 20,000 bonus Qantas Points or Amplify Points will be credited to your points balance within 6 weeks of: (1) the anniversary of your first eligible purchase transaction and (2) payment of your annual credit card fee.
