BOQ in Queensland and beyond

Bank of Queensland’s credit cards are backed by NAB and offer a variety of card types to suit everyone.

About Bank of Queensland Credit Cards

Bank of Queensland is a Queensland focused bank but operates across Australia. It represents a strong alternative to the ‘big 4’ banking groups and also foreign banks strengthening in Australia.

History

Bank of Queensland as a name was introduced in 1970, but the original banking group was established in 1874 as the Brisbane Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society. BOQ remains an independent bank despite being a public company.

They have over 260 branches across Australia (2012) with the primary focus in Queensland. BOQ also retains community investment and sponsorship in Queensland as a main focus.

With each branch proudly owned and run by owner-managers, Bank of Queensland is an organisation that is close to its customers and understands what they need.

Credit cards

If you want to save money on your credit card, try the BOQ Low Rate Visa for a no frills card with low ongoing interest rates that will save you money if you tend to carry a balance each month.

If you want to be rewarded for your spending, there are two great choices: the basic BOQ Blue low rate Visa then BOQ Platinum, set apart by tiered rewards earning. Extra perks are available with Platinum, such as a premium Concierge and a range of complimentary insurances.

I have a platinum Credit Card with BoQ. I am doing a trek along the Larapinta Trail (NT) in August and am seeking Travel Insurance prior to and during the trip. Am I entitled to travel insurance via my Credit Card entitlements? Thanks Neil

Hi Neil, I checked this for you and it looks like this card only features international travel insurance. You might want to look into comparing a range of domestic travel insurance options for your coverage. Have a great trek Neil!

can you please explain what the "Fixed Payment" card is... I just cancelled my CardGuard Ins. and I was given a choice of transferring to this card thank you

Hi Steve, we currently only compare this card and I tried checking the bank’s page however there’s no mention of a ‘fixed payment’ card. Citibank offer a “Fixed Payment Option” on a range of Citibank credit cards. The Citi feature allows you to pay a lower interest rate on an outstanding balance for a certain period of time. It also looks like CardGuard included a form or “Price Protection Guarantee”, which we’ve written about. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Raghu, I tried to access the rewards site - https://www.boqrewards.com/cms/sites/bq-eng/index.page. When I click on the cashback section it goes to a login screen. Therefore I was not able to check this information. Reach out to BOQ directly on this.

I have never had a credit card before, I have a visa debit card through BOQ. What would you suggest?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    24 July 2018
Hi Charmayne, it will depend on what you want to get out of it, in terms of rewards. Like Qantas points or items for the home. Also if you can pay it off in full each month. The amount you will spend each month will also have a big impact. Generally I would start off with a low rate card with a low credit limit and see how it works for you. Something like the ANZ Low Rate could work.

If I invested $1,000 into a credit card and $1,000 into a debit card. Which one would give me a better return and by how much?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    22 July 2018
Hi Joshua, a credit card does not pay interest. Therefore you cannot earn on a credit card. Some provide cash back for reward points. A debit card can provide some interest bearing on the funds but this tends to be light. Have a look for online high interest savings accounts.

Going to the USA end of year,is my credit card, low rate visa, suitable for travel purchases ?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    21 March 2017
Hi Frank, it is suitable for use in the USA though it does charge FX fees. That is you will pay 3.4% on all overseas purchases as a straight fee. You could look at a card like the ANZ Travel Adventure that has no FX fees. Additionally the overseas travel insurance and other features of the card suit people that like to travel.

    3 November 2016
Hi Michael, it can be tricky to be approved for a credit card when yo are a pensioner, though it can happen. Give BOQ customer service a call or go into a branch and discuss your needs for a credit card. Best of luck with your application.

If I already have NAB visa platinum and American Express cards that are attracting frequent flyer points is there any advantage in me cancelling them and getting a bank of Queensland Platinum card. the only reason I have for thinking about this is that I have transferred all my cash to Bank of Queensland because of the interest rate I was able to get on my investment.
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    15 September 2016
Hi Barbara, if you are happy with your current NAB card(s) then there is no need to cancel or change them. Credit cards should be independent from other banking services and targeted towards whatever is best for you. I have a card with Citi but my deposits are with CBA and NAB. In the end all financial products should be decided on their personal merit and benefits.
