The Citi Rewards Credit Card Review - Flybuys offer

Apply for the Citi Rewards Credit Card today, and you could take advantage of 100,000 bonus Flybuys points. You’ll also save on interest with 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 6 months (no balance transfer fee applies). Ongoing, you will earn rewards on the ever-flexible Citi Rewards Program, while accessing the card’s wide range of perks. Minimum spend of $5,000 within 90 days of card approval applies.

Clarification on earning points: The bonus offer is paid in Flybuys points, but the points you earn on your spending every day are Citi reward points. You can transfer Citi points to Flybuys via your Citi Mobile App or online account (or a number of other rewards or frequent flyer programs).

What we love...

Time to get into that offer.

As a new cardholder, you can get your hands on 100,000 bonus Flybuys points – all you need to do is spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within 90 days of card approval. So then, what can you spend those points on – and what are they worth? When it comes to value – as with any rewards redemption – it really depends on how you use the points.

You could opt to cash-in your 100,000 Flybuys bonus points for $375 worth of Flybuys dollars at participating retail partners. Alternatively, you could redeem your points within the Flybuys store. There are many redemption options, with varying values on offer so it’s up to you to choose how to redeem your points in order to get the best value for you.

If you are looking to cut down your interest costs, this card also gives 0% interest on balance transfers for 6 months with no balance transfer fee.

What’s not so great...

Before you apply, think about what you will pay out on the card to take advantage of its offer – and its various features. Make sure you can afford to spend $5,000 on the card within the first three months, to then pay back your spending before it attracts interest. Also, think about whether the standard annual fee offers value on your spending ongoing.

If you tend to carry a balance, you may find this card helpful in paying down your existing debt. Keep in mind that a significant cash advance rate (currently 22.24% p.a.) kicks in after the 6-month promotional period. If you’ve got a balance to transfer, paying it off should be your focus over chasing bonus points.

Why should you choose this card?

If you’re looking for a rewards card that earns points on a flexible rewards program, the Citi Rewards Credit Card may just be for you.

  • Earn 1 Citi rewards Point per $1 on all eligible transactions made overseas or online with a merchant that is based overseas
  • Earn 1 Citi rewards Point per $1 on all eligible transactions in Australia (up to $10,000 per statement period)

And options to redeem the points you earn?

  • Pay with Points: Use your points to cover eligible purchases. All you need to do is choose which purchases you want to cover with points, and you will receive a credit back.
  • Shop with Points: You can use your points to pay when shopping at Kogan's website.
  • Transfer: Choose to transfer your Citi reward Points to partner programs, including Emirates Skywards, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Flybuys and more.

Let’s take a quick look at the various extras on offer.

  • My Cashback. My Cashback is a no-fuss, hassle-free rewards program of Citi which allows cardholders to automatically receive monthly cashback on their purchases when they use their Citi Clear Card to shop from their favorite brands. Access the program in the Citi Mobile® App and check some personalised offers.
  • Compatibility with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay
  • 24/7 support offering round-the-clock customer service, and fraud protection
  • Complimentary insurance covers including International Travel Insurance, Transit Accident Insurance, Purchase Cover Insurance, Extended Warranty Insurance and Guaranteed Pricing Scheme
  • Complimentary Mobile Phone Insurance
  • Personal concierge service available 24/7
  • Access to Citi instalment plans
  • You can take advantage of the Citi PayAll feature which lets you schedule recurring payments for your rent, education fees, childcare, taxes, bills, and more. Effective 1 November 2023, the Citi PayAll fee changed to 0.95% of the amount being paid.

Overall Rating

The Citi Rewards Credit Card is a seriously rewarding rewards card, offering access not just to the Citi Rewards Program, but to a number of excellent extras, including overseas travel insurance. On top of all that, as a new cardholder, you can benefit from 100,000 bonus Flybuys points (minimum spend applies) plus, 0% balance transfer offer for 6 months with no balance transfer fee.

hi, Can I pay my mortgage with this card as part of CitiPayAll feature?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 August 2024
Hi there, Citi doesn’t list home loans as an eligible transaction for Citi PayAll. It says “pay your rent, education expenses, taxes, property management fees (for example, water, gas or electricity bills, strata payments or land tax) and other bills using your Citi credit card. It comes with a 0.95% fee too. It’s generally not recommended to mix mortgages with credit cards, since the interest rate is so much higher. Thanks!

Hi I applied and got the approval letter on the 27 of Jan. I haven’t activated yet but just want to ensure will I be eligible for the flybuys points offer still

Hi Jane, the terms on the card say, “To be eligible to receive 40,000 Flybuys bonus points, you must apply for the Citi Rewards Card by 31 January 2023, then spend a minimum of $3,000 on eligible purchases using your new card within 90 days from approval.” So it would seem that as long as you applied before the cut-off date, you’re still eligible. To check for sure, you can contact Citi directly on 1300 032 824. Thanks for your question!

Hi Rosangela, yes we can! According to the Citi Rewards Flybuys card’s terms, they will actually request via email your Flybuys membership information from you in 8 weeks from meeting the spend criteria. The Flybuys points will then be added to your Flybuys account within 6 weeks from when they receive your Flybuys information.

Hi Vish, great question! We dug through all of Citi’s PDF terms and conditions but couldn’t find any information on the specifics. You can give Citi a call on 13 24 84 to find out more. If you get an answer, let us know!

Hi Tracey, thanks for your question. We did some digging and it looks like you’ll be recognised as a ‘new customer’ if you haven’t had any Citi branded credit card. Hope this answers your question.
