Who suits the Coles No Annual Fee card?

Globetrotter: you love travelling, and get a buzz from earning points that make your trips free and more fun. Deal Digger: you're always on the lookout for freebie perks like insurances, dining discounts and earning points for paying bills. Healthy Spender: your cashflow is high but healthy and you want to earn high-volume points. Discounts and money tools are a bonus.

Coles calls its No Annual Fee credit card ‘uncomplicated value’, and I think that’s a spot-on description. It’s not a card with a zillion features, but it has two big power moves that are things people love: rewards points, and no annual fee (free stuff, basically).

The big bonus is the 10,000 Flybuys points, which you almost never see on a card with no annual fee. I’ll explain the offers and how to use the card for the best value.

Editor's Review: What I love about the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard

This card earns uncapped Flybuys points, which you can turn into Velocity points or redeem for merchandise from the Flybuys online rewards store or in-person at Coles (that's how I have some very nice stemless glasses). Let’s look at the features first.

No annual fee: Yep, there’s no annual fee, ever. That’s an easy one.

Rewards points: Receive 10,000 Flybuys bonus points when you spend $3000 on eligible purchases within 90 days from approval and if you apply 03 March 2025. Once you’ve hit the criteria, the points will be credited to your Flybuys Membership Account within 4 weeks. The 10,000 Flybuys points is equivalent to $50 Flybuys dollars or 5000 Velocity points.

Rewards points: You’ll earn 1 Flybuys point for every $2 you spend on eligible purchases anywhere, which makes it easier to accrue points if you're a Flybuys fan. It's not the highest earn rate you'll find (it's essentially 0.5 points per $1), but to earn more per dollar on other cards you'll start paying annual fees which lessens the value of your points anyway.

🔎 What items aren't considered eligible? The terms on the card say these purchases won’t count towards the $3000: “Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest, ATM charges, transactions made using Flybuys Points and government related transactions”.

Coles also has Easy Instalment plans, which let you split your purchases into smaller monthly repayments over a timeframe that suits your repayment ability. There are 3 types of Easy Instalment plans:

  • Cash Instalment Plans, where you can withdraw cash and deposit it in your bank account
  • Transaction Instalment Plans, where you nominate purchases you’ve made and split them into smaller monthly repayments
  • Statement Instalment Plans, where retail purchases from your most recent statement are converted into monthly repayments

Other perks

The Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard comes with an interest-free period of 55 days on new purchases. This feature allows you to make everyday purchases without being charged interest during this period, as long as you pay off the full closing balance each month.

This card also comes with complimentary purchase protection insurance that covers items you bought with your card against loss, theft, and accidental damages, as well as extended warranty insurance that provides reimbursement in case your purchased items suffer a covered breakdown.

I’ve seen some negative reviews about customer service (as is usually the case with banks, honestly), but when I called to double-check a policy on the card I got through within a couple of minutes and had my question answered immediately by a very friendly representative. My experience isn’t a guarantee, of course, but it was a positive one for the record.

What can you get with Flybuys?

Flights & Travel
1000 Flybuys points =
500 Velocity points
Shopping
2000 Flybuys points =
$10 off your shop
Gift cards
20,000 Flybuys points =
$100 Bunnings gift card
Points are correct as at August 1, 2023. Points values may change without notice, so please check the Flybuys website to calculate your rewards.

Flybuys points are flexible to use and can be redeemed for:

Velocity Points, which is Virgin’s rewards program. You can use Velocity points for flights, flight upgrades, hotels, car hire and more.
Merchandise from the Flybuys store, which includes over 1000 products such as appliances, technology, gift cards and homeware.
Money off your shopping at participating Flybuys stores like Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Catch, First Choice Liquor Market, Optus and Shell Coles Express.
Points + Pay, where you can make a purchase using some points and pay the remainder with cash.

💡Earn more points by double-tapping: tap your Flybuys card at the checkout when you pay with your Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard to earn additional points. The number of points you'll earn from your Flybuys membership card varies at participating stores but is generally 1 point per $1 spent.

What's not so great...

This card is a fantastic tool for earning rewards on your purchases, but it's important to use it wisely to maximise its benefits. Here's what I mean.

This card has 55 days interest-free on new purchases, which means you can avoid paying interest if you pay the card off in time. As soon as you start paying interest, you lower the value of your hard-earned Flybuys points. Flybuys points are pretty flexible in how you earn and use them, so they're worth working for (especially if you funnel them into Velocity Points that turn into free flights).

There are some standard fees with this card, but nothing extraordinary or eye-popping. For instance, you'll pay 2.5% in international transaction fees, a $30 late payment fee and $1.95 per cash advance under $65 in Australia, or 3% if the transaction is over $65.

Overall Rating

Considering it has no annual fee for life, the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard actually has a very decent set of extras, including 10,000 Flybuys bonus points offer. It’s a good card to consider if you’re after something that earns rewards points on your regular shopping but doesn’t have the big costs of a premium rewards card..

Its low $1000 credit limit also makes it a good one to look at if you’re a first timer, or to keep as an emergency fund. If you’re keen on the 10,000 Flybuys bonus points offer, just remember it’s for a limited time.

No annual fee so I didn’t expect anything but it’s good one. I’ve been using it for 2 years and got 4 times of $10 off offer with Flybuys in Coles. It fits my ordinary life.

My only gripe is the complication of unblocking my account when I accidentally keyed in the incorrect app pin and password. Only way to fix this is to phone them. Phone workflow could be better.

I have used my new credit card many times but keep getting conflicting information about the $100 offer Today I was told that I had to spend over $100 to receive it. Other times I was told to spend any amount activates the $100 offer. Not happy.

Hi Daniel, no such things as a silly question! Flybuys points can be earned at certain stores, like Coles, Target, Officeworks, Bunnings, First Choice and Kmart (you can see the list here). You can tap your Coles No Annual Fee card to pay and earn points, and tap your Flybuys card at the same time to earn more points on top. Points can be used for gift cards, $10 off Coles groceries or spent online with retailers. Or, you can convert your Flybuys points to Velocity points, which you can use to fly with Virgin airlines and their partner airlines. Here’s how to do that: Step 1: Download the Flybuys app and set up an account or log in to your existing account. Step 2: Download the Velocity app and make a new account (it’s free). Step 3: Go into your Flybuys account on the app and link your Velocity account using your membership number. Then you can set up your Flybuys points to convert to Velocity automatically, if that’s how you want to spend your points. Go into the Flybuys app under “Auto transfer your points” and choose Velocity. Lots of info there, but I hope it helps!

What are eligible and not eligible purchases to earn points
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 August 2024
Hi Barney, like any other card issuers, Coles does not publish a list of what transactions are considered eligible, but these usually consist of your day-to-day transactions like paying for your car’s petrol, pet’s vet, meal at your favourite restaurant, grocerie, etc. They however listed that transactions such as balance transfers, cash advances, and the like are not considered eligible.

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    28 August 2024
Hi Alan, Coles uses the Mastercard exchange rate, but there’s no information about whether Coles adds anything to the rate (which can be the case for third-party currency converters like credit cards). I hope that helps!

    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    9 May 2024
Hi Alex, yes you can use the Coles No Annual Fee card overseas. Please note that there’s a 2.5% foreign transaction fee for every overseas transaction, so it might not be “ok” in your books. There are ways to avoid those nasty credit card currency conversion fees, if you compare a range of credit cards.

Hi Colin, you'll be able to use your superannuation statement as proof of money being debited to you. Most banks will ask for at least 3 months' statements. This blog on applying as a retiree might help. There is no specific information available on what Coles requires, but you can see what other banks ask for that might give you an idea. Thanks Colin!

Hi Jean, this card used to have bonus points but it's now switched to a 0% interest on new purchases offer. You'll still earn Flybuys points when you use the card, and you can earn extra points if you tap your Flybuys card as well. Thanks Jean!

Hi Pauline, a few questions on this "Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard" card: 1. At what point do I get charged interest if I dont pay off the balance? is it basically pay off what I owe by end of the month and get charged no interest? 2. Can I setup direct debit payments for bills directly to the credit card and get charged no fee's and earn flybuy points? 3. can flybuy points convert to virgin velocity points? 4. Does this credit card have an iphone app I can manage it with? 5. Do i need to do shopping at coles or can it be other supermarkets and still get flybuy points? I guess if you want to double dip you need to go coles right? 6. Is there a fee if we want another card? i.e. for my wife sorry for all the questions. looking for a new credit card as im currently with commbank earning qantas points for a fee of $120 a year but dont use qantas anymore!

Hi Jose, thanks for the questions. I'll answer below that lines up with your numbers.
    1. Interest can be a tricky thing. You can learn all there is to know with my guide on interest free days. Understanding your statement is crucial. Check your statement for the amount due as this card comes with a 0% p.a. on purchases for 6 months offer.
    2. Technically this is possible, provided the bills you aren't paying are to Government bodies (e.g. Water, council rates etc)
    3. They sure can. You can even choose to have this done automatically behind the scenes so you don't have to worry about it. You can also earn status credits in some cases too
    4. Yes. You can manage your card and flybuys account with the app.
    5. You are absolutely correct. You'll earn 0.5 points for every dollar you spend, and if you scan your flybuys card you'll get another point.
    6. There is no additional cardholder fees
Hopefully that covers off all your questions Jose. It's great to see people researching their next credit card so thoroughly!

Hi Pauline, Hope your well. In relation to the "Spend $3000 on eligible purchases within 90 days from approval" do you know what an "eligible" purchase would be? Regards, Phil.
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    6 February 2024
Hi Phil, I understand your question, and it's a common one. Unfortunately, card issuers, including Coles, typically don't provide a specific list of what qualifies as 'eligible' purchases. However, these generally refer to your everyday transactions, such as buying groceries, filling up your car with petrol, visiting the vet, dining at a restaurant, and similar retail transactions. It's important to note that transactions like cash advances, balance transfers, fees, and charges are not considered eligible, as mentioned on Coles' website.
