Gold & Platinum Credit Cards

Pauline Hatch

Platinum and gold credit cards are top-tier cards with all the bells and whistles you could want. As well as rewards on your spending and higher credit limits, platinum cards come with added perks like 24/7 concierge services, discounts with partnering businesses and even free wine. Some top-tier cards come with slightly higher fees, so make sure you compare cards to find one with the features you want and a price tag that suits.

Are Gold and Platinum cards a good choice for you?

Gold and Platinum credit cards are premium credit cards designed for people with higher incomes. They usually offer a higher credit limit as well as more attractive bonus features and better reward packages.

Top-tier cards generally come with a higher rate of interest and higher fees, finely balanced with perks to make it worth the slightly higher costs of the card.

How do I choose the best Gold or Platinum credit card?

Gold and Platinum cards are all about the perks and the reward packages, so choosing the best one for you depends on your lifestyle. They may appeal to a high spender, a time-poor person, a frequent diner-out or someone considering the value of free purchase protection and travel insurance.

When shopping around consider the interest rates, annual fees, and a reward package that suits your needs and how they impact the value that you receive.

Avoid the biggest mistakes

The biggest mistake with Gold and Platinum cards is choosing features that don’t offset the costs. You should choose a card that offers a range of benefits and features that you will most likely use and also give you value for money.

Hi, I'm building a house and am required to make milestone payments at each stage. I'm wondering it it would be smarter for me to pay each milestone by credit card and obtain the rewards that come from that and then pay off the credit card balance immediately with my savings. Is there a card that I could get that has uncapped limits or anything up to $400K in Australia?

Hi Matt, what you’ve described is very interesting. We mainly deal with consumer credit cards, but what you’ve mentioned sounds like it could be done with a charge card. Charge cards come with no pre-set credit limit, rather you must repay all the money you have spent in that statement period in full. However your transactions are approved according to income, credit, repayment history and spending patterns. Of course this isn’t personal advice so you should seek your own advice before deciding to go down this route. Let us know how you go!. Thanks for asking such an interesting question.

Hi Dennis, you will need to contact the customer service for your bank directly to get a replacement card. I do not think that you can keep the same number if they send you out a new card but this may vary depending on your bank.

Hi Roland. I'm wondering if the Citi Prestige or American Express Platinum cards come in metal? I've searched online for metal cards and it seems they are only available to Americans (e.g. the Chase cards). Do you know of any we can get here in Australia? Thanks!

Hi Gavin, I know the AMEX Black card is metal but this is invitation only after you have had an AMEX Platinum card for some time with good use. The Prestige card feels pretty nice but is not metal.
