The Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card

As its name suggests, the Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card focuses on value, providing one low rate on purchases, cash advances and balance transfers for a low annual fee. The card also offers up to 55 days interest free on purchases, three free additional cardholders on the account, and all the features you would expect on a standard Visa card.

What we love...

One of the first things to note on the Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card is its low rate of interest across purchases, cash advances and balance transfers. Why would this be of interest to you? A low purchase rate could work well for you if you carry a balance on your card. Instead of paying a much higher interest rate on a more expensive card, you could pay less on this card thanks to its lower purchase rate, which could help you clear your balance faster.

Once you manage to clear your balance, you can take advantage of the card’s handy interest free feature. With this, you can benefit from up to 55 days interest free on purchases when you pay off your balance by the due date each month. This could allow you to keep interest costs at zero for everything from larger purchases to everyday spending.

While it may not offer much in the way of features, the Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card does make up for it with a low annual fee. You will usually find cards that offer more in the way of features, such as extras and rewards, often have a higher annual fee. But, you may not need those features. If that’s the case, a low feature card charging a low annual fee may be more your style.

Alongside its low annual fee, this card allows up to three additional cards at no extra charge. If you have family members you’d like to add to the account, this could save you money, offering those who need it access to credit, while streamlining your family finances with just one credit card account to track and pay, rather than up to four.

What’s not so great...

When it comes to low cost cards such as the Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card, we generally don’t find much to complain about. Paying less in annual fees and interest will always be appealing, and that’s exactly what this card offers. But, we do know that this type of card does not appeal to everyone. If you want to earn rewards, or perhaps take advantage of extravagant extras, it may be time to compare other options.

Why should you choose this card?

The Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card provides access to credit across the Visa network. This means you can use the card around the world, wherever Visa is accepted, while also taking advantage of functional features such as Visa payWave and Visa Checkout, backed by Visa's Zero Liability.

With a low minimum income requirement of $20,000 per year, plus a low minimum credit limit of $500, it may suit smaller spenders, or really, anyone who wants to keep costs down. To be eligible, you need to be over the age of 18, and an Australian citizen currently residing in Australia who meets that minimum income requirement. From there, it’s a simple online application process that requires:

  • Your Australian driver’s licence (if applicable),
  • Employment details,
  • Details of your income, assets and liabilities,
  • Information about any additional cardholders (if applicable),
  • A copy of your most recent payslip, or if you are self-employed, your financial statements and personal tax returns for the past two years.

Overall Rating

The Newcastle Permanent Value+ Credit Card keeps costs down with a low annual fee, up to 55 days interest free on purchases and one low rate on purchases, cash advances and balance transfers.

How do I pay payments for my credit card, do I receive statements?

Hi Leanne, yep you’ll get a statement (either digital or paper - you can decide) with the amount owing. You can either make the payment yourself online, or most cards let you set up automatic payments. That means you can set your card to automatically pay either the minimum amount due or the full balance from a nominated bank account. That way you don’t have to think about it or risk late payment fees. I hope that helps, thanks Leanne!

Hi there! You’re actually on Creditcard.com.au, Australia’s leading credit card comparison and information site. I checked this for you though and Newcastle Permanent Building Society operates Newcastle Permanent credit card. In a related note, NAB just bought the consumer arm of Citi, which means the cards that Citi provided credit for, are now with NAB.
