Digging Deeper

With the basics covered, it’s time to dig a little deeper into what’s on offer with the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card, so you can decide whether this card is right for you.

This Card: As a Rewards Card

First and foremost, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card is a rewards card. So, what does it have to offer in the way of rewards?

Bonus Points Introductory Offer

Enticing new cardholders to apply, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card is currently offering up to 80,000 bonus Velocity Points and are approved. However, the points are only available in increments, once a minimum spend on the card has been made.

As long as you spend $3,500 on eligible transactions each month for the first 2 months, you will be credited with 40,000 bonus Velocity Points each month, up to a total of 80,000 bonus Velocity Points. Points will then be credited to your account within 60 days of the qualifying spend being met.

While you may need to check the small print for more info, most everyday purchases are classed as ‘eligible’. Excluded purchases include cash advances, balance transfers, special promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges, and government-related transactions.

To be eligible for the offer – aside from meeting the card’s standard eligibility requirements – you must apply through the specific Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card page or call them direct, indicating that you would like the High Flyer Card 80,000 bonus Velocity Points offer.

It is worth pointing out that the eligible spend criteria on this card is fairly high. Plenty of rewards cards offer bonus points with an eligible spend criteria, but that usually involves a one-off amount to be spent over a period of three months or so.

With the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card, you have to spend at least $3,500 each month for two months to take home the bonus points. All good, if you plan on spending that amount anyway, but not so good if you don’t want to – or can’t afford to – spend that much on your card each and every month.

Everyday Earning

As an everyday earner, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card makes it easy to earn Velocity Points on your day-to-day purchases. The earn structure is as follows:

  • Earn 1 Velocity Point per $1 spent up to $8,000 each statement period,
  • Earn 0.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent thereafter.

You can earn points when booking travel with Virgin Australia and its airline partners, plus you can earn bonus points when booking with a Velocity accommodation, car hire or holiday and travel partner. If you are a Platinum, Gold or Silver Velocity member, you can earn even more bonus points, helping to increase that points total further.

Finding out more about how the Velocity frequent flyer program works is a must if you’re new to it all. Checking out their website provides easy ways you can earn more points using your card, simply by choosing to make purchases at certain partners, such as BP service stations, Virgin Active and EnergyAustralia.

Redeeming Points

Much like its competitor, the Qantas frequent flyer program, Velocity offers cardholders an amazing range of ways in which they can spend their points. As a Velocity member, you can use your points for flights to over 600 destinations worldwide, you can upgrade your flight status, or you can redeem your points for holiday packages, accommodation and car hire.

If you want to treat yourself to a bit of retail therapy, you can use your points in the Velocity Rewards Store to pick up anything from the latest gadget to a designer handbag, or alternatively, you can redeem your points for fuel or in-store at participating BP service stations. If you’re short on points but have your eye on something special, you can purchase points to get there sooner.

This Card: As a Travel Rewards Card

As a Virgin Australia credit card, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card can easily be classed as a travel rewards card, providing cardholders with a selection of travel-related features perfect for the frequent traveller.

Virgin Australia Gift Voucher

Balancing out its annual fee somewhat, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card offers cardholders an exclusive $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher each year. To benefit from this feature, all you need to do is make a retail purchase on the card within two months prior to requesting your voucher.

The voucher can then be used when booking Virgin Australia flights on any fare type (including sale fares), or on selected Virgin Australia Holidays’ packages any time within six months of the voucher issue date. Take note that this voucher is only provided to primary cardholders, not to additional cardholders, and you must be a Velocity Frequent Flyer Member to be eligible.

Lounge Access

Another appealing feature of the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card is its complimentary lounge access. As a cardholder, you will receive two Single Entry Virgin Australia domestic Lounge passes each year, allowing you to relax and enjoy some time out before your flight.

These passes will automatically appear in your Velocity account each year as an anniversary present, and are valid until your next card anniversary. Again, these passes are only given out to the primary accountholder, not additional cardholders.

International Travel Insurance

As part of the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card’s suite of complimentary insurance covers, its international travel insurance provides peace of mind when travelling abroad. To benefit from this cover, simply use your card to pay for your and your family’s overseas flights, and you’ll receive international travel insurance for you, your spouse and any dependent children, provided they travel with you.

The cover provided includes medical expenses for illness or injury, loss or theft of personal items, legal liability and more, but be sure to read the card’s Complimentary Insurance Terms and Conditions to make sure it offers all the cover you need.

This Card: Extras on Offer

Prestige cards such as the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card are often sold on their extras. Aside from its rewards program and travel-related features, this card also offers some handy extras that may bring real value to cardholders.

Balance Transfer Offer

Allowing you to save on interest while you pay down more of your balance, a balance transfer offer can provide an excellent way to clear existing credit card debt. With the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card, you can take advantage of 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 12 months, giving you a nice long time to chip away at that debt.

If you’re interested in this offer, know that you can transfer up to 80% of your approved credit limit, and at the end of the introductory period, any balance left unpaid will revert to the card’s cash advance rate. Happily, there is no balance transfer fee, but all balance transfers must be requested at the time of application.

Extended Warranty Insurance

When using your card to buy items under warranty, you can benefit from an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty with this extended warranty insurance. With the cover, the manufacturer’s warranty period is generally doubled, for up to 12 months, giving you some added protection should the item fail within that extended period.

Purchase Cover

Another retail-related cover perfect for everyday spending, this purchase cover provides 90 days free insurance against loss, theft or accidental damage on a wide range of new personal goods purchased anywhere in the world using your card.

Visa Signature Benefits

Unique Visa privileges are provided to Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card holders in the form of Visa Signature Benefits. As a cardholder, you can enjoy holiday offers on hotels and resorts around the world and up to 30% discount on green fees at some of the most prestigious golf clubs around the world.

With Visa Entertainment, you’ll have access to the hottest entertainment offers, and with Visa Concierge, you can make use of your very own personal assistant, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This Card: The Essentials

Having covered everything the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card has to offer, now it’s time to look at what you can expect to pay to keep it in your wallet. As it is a feature-packed rewards card, the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card has a relatively high annual fee, charging $329 for the primary cardholder, and $89 for each additional cardholder.

Both the purchase rate and cash advance rate on the card are not particularly low, so it’s best to avoid cash advances whenever possible, and also clear your statement month to month to avoid interest accruing. Be aware that to be eligible for card approval, you need to earn at least $75,000 per year, and you can expect a minimum credit limit on the card of $15,000.

Decision Time

The Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Credit Card markets itself as ‘seriously rewarding’ – and for the most part, it is. You can earn Velocity Points on everyday spending, with the opportunity to earn bonus points with Velocity partners. You can also enjoy a fantastic selection of travel-related features and extras, plus up to 80,000 bonus Velocity Points, $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher each year and 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 12 months.

If you travel a lot on virgin this would be a good card to get. You get some good perks – similar to a platinum card, you earn points and can get good rewards. I like th fact that you get the buy one seat get one free on four domestic flights in a year. Comes in handy. Interest rate is pretty high, but it’s worth it if you pay off all your balance each month.

Hi, do I have to spend $3500 each month for four months, or $3500 over four months to qualify for the bonus velocity points?
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    20 March 2023
Hi Wayne, that’s a good question! To receive the 25,000 bonus Velocity Points for the first 4 months, you must spend a minimum of $3500 each month. Therefore, if you are approved for the card in March and spend only $4000 in the first month, you will receive the bonus points for the first month. However, if you spend $2000 in the second month, you won’t receive the 25,000 bonus points for that month. But, if in month 3 you spend $3750 you’ll get the points. It’s not the most simple bonus points system, so I hope this helps!

Do you cover travel insurance if the trip is booked through a travel agent? I have a Virgin high flyer credit card thanks, John
    Pauline - CreditCard.com.au

    Pauline

    21 February 2023
Hi John, the PDS says that you must obtain the overseas travel ticket by either charging the cost of the travel ticket to your card, redeeming Velocity Points or redeeming a Virgin Australia Gift Voucher. It doesn’t say you can’t use a travel agent, but does specify that travel agent charges aren’t counted as part of your travel costs and can’t be claimed if you need to use your travel insurance. You can read all the details in the PDS (which I highly recommend, just so you know what you’re covered for). Virgin Money’s insurance is underwritten by Allianz Global Assistance, so you can always give them a call on 1800 072 791 if you want to double check. Thanks John!

Hi Tony, according to Virgin you'll need to pay for you and your family’s overseas flights on the card. As with all insurance policies it's best to check the PDS before using the insurances. Hi! I’d like to transfer from my credit platinum MasterCard to this credit card. I am a frequent flyer with virgin! I have a question though, I am leaving Perth on Thursday and was wondering if there is anywhere I would be able to pick the new card up by then? Or is that too soon? I am happy to pay a fee if this is possible! Thank you very much, kind regards, Hannah Mackinley

Hi Hannah, there is no way to get approved and receive your card within that period of time. What bank is the card you wish to transfer from? I would apply for the Virgin card ASAP to get it in your wallet ASAP. Though the process with Christmas is likely to take 5-10 working days.

Can I apply to have a zero interest balance transfer credit card to pay off someone else's credit card - e.g. me open a credit card and pay off someone else's credit cards?
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    20 November 2019
Hi Kaye, no you can not. A balance transfer must be between the same legal person. What you can look to do is get a low rate personal loan. Pay out the other persons debt, thus taking it on yourself. Then later on look to get a 0% balance transfer for the loan. Citi will accept non-Citi loans as for a balance transfer.

What are the spending restrictions for the Virgin High Flyer Visa, some cards do not allow to make purchases with gov agencies, dept of transport etc,
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    22 August 2019
Hi David, nearly all cards (accept AMEX and business) earn points on government spend now. I have grabbed from the terms what an eligible transaction is, as far for the Virgin High Flyer. Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi–government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).

    12 July 2019
Hi Taylor, it is true that Virgin Money is owned by BOQ. Though I do not think this makes the payments real time between the 2.

on average i spend around $3000 per month with Westpac, i'm looking at home loan and credit card through you and if i'm $200 short on the 3k spend one month what is to stop me buying then returning a few days later to spend that addiitonal amount. as im sure one in the three months i may fall short? is there any stipulation to stop you making a 'temporary purchase'
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    12 July 2019
Hi Talyor, it needs to be an eligible purchase to count towards the bonus points. If you do credit back a purchase. Then this amount would be removed. Interestingly though as you state, if you made a purchase that month it should count. Then you cancel that purchase in the next month. It should go against that next months activity.

Hi Roland, I previously had a Virgin Flyer Card that I cancelled in January. If I apply for the High Flyer Card am I eligible for the bonus points offer? I know some card providers make you wait 18 months to be eligible for bonus offers again, but I can't find any documentation on the policy for the Virgin cards? Cheers
    Roland B Bleyer - CreditCard.com.au Founder

    Roland

    29 May 2019
Hi Steve, from the terms, it just references new High Flyer card holders. Therefore I don't think that you having cancelled a flyer card in Jan will affect your eligibility. Its long winded but here are the terms on the bonus points. 90,000 bonus Velocity Points offer is available to new approved Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card account holders who apply by 30 June 2019. 30,000 bonus Velocity Points will be awarded for every month $3,000 or more is spent on Eligible Transactions for 3 months from card approval. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs). See Rewards Program for High Flyer and Flyer Cardholders Terms and Conditions for full details and definition. Please note that if you have a balance transfer, you will be charged interest on any spend you make. Credit Card application must be submitted through this page or by calling 1300 771 634 and indicating that you would like the High Flyer Card 90,000 Velocity Points offer. Points will be credited to the Primary Cardholders Velocity Account up to 60 days after the qualifying purchases. To earn and redeem Velocity Points there must be an active Velocity Frequent Flyer Membership linked to the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card account. Velocity membership and Points earn and redemption are subject to the member Terms and Conditions, as amended from time to time. Hi Kit, it will depend on what points you are trying to earn. Though since you don't have cards then I say getting maximum bonus points is a good start. This Virgin High Flyer card has good bonus points. You just need to make sure that you spend 3k each month for the first 5 months to get the full 80k. Points earning halves in at 8k spend so if you are regularly spending more than this, it can be an issue. I myself have both Velocity and Qantas frequent flyer accounts. I would suggest (as well) the AMEX Qantas Ultimate with 100k in Qantas points. I just applied and was approved for this offer. 100k in Qantas points could definitely take care of a few domestic flights. Also the Ultimate has uncapped points earning so you can spend, spend, spend. Offers do come out with 100k Velocity bonus points but there is non in market that I know right now.
